REASONS TO SANCTIFY THE SABBATH
1 – Because God Himself commanded us to sanctify it. For He said:
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God; you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your animal, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8–11.
2 – Because it is the sign between God and His people.
“Sanctify my Sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.” Ezekiel 20:20.
3 – Because it is a memorial of creation.
“And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.” Genesis 2:2.
4 – Because God rested on it.
“And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” Genesis 2:2 and 3.
5 – Because God blessed and sanctified the Sabbath day.
“And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” Genesis 2:3.
6 – Because it is part of God’s righteousness.
“Your commandments are righteousness.” Psalm 119:172, last part.
7 – Because it is an integral part of God’s law.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God; you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor the stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8-11.
8 – For blessed is the man who keeps it.
“Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who takes hold of it; who keeps himself from profaning the Sabbath, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.” Isaiah 56:2.
9 – For it is the Lord’s holy day.
“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and honor it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, then you will delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth, and I will sustain you with the inheritance of your father Jacob; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.” Isaiah 58:13 and 14.
10 – Because God’s law is eternal.
“Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and your law is truth. Psalm 119:142.
11 – Because whoever practices God's righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous.
“Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous.” 1 John 3:7.
12 – Because, due to the transgression of the Sabbath, God commanded that a man who was caught gathering wood on that day be put to death.
“While the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and to the whole congregation. And they put him in custody, because it had not been declared what should be done to him. Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘The man must be put to death; the whole assembly must stone him outside the camp. So the whole assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the Lord had commanded Moses.’" Numbers 15:32-36.
13 – For by them we have life.
“But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness, not walking in my statutes, and rejecting my judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them; and they greatly profaned my Sabbaths; and I said I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.” Ezekiel 20:13.
14 – Because he is the truth of God.
“Your law is truth.” Psalm 119:142, last part.
15 – Because of the transgression of the Sabbath, God poured out his wrath on the people of Israel.
“But the children also rebelled against me and did not walk in my statutes, nor keep my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall live in them; they profaned my Sabbaths; therefore I said I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my wrath upon them in the wilderness.” “Because they did not execute my judgments, and rejected my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were after the idols of their fathers.” Ezekiel 20:21 and 24.
16 – Because in the instruction given by God, it says:
“Neither shall you carry any burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work; but you shall hallow the Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.” Verse 22.
17 – Because Nehemiah reminded the people that, because of their transgression of the Sabbath, God was angry with their ancestors.
“In those days I saw in Judah those who were treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in sheaves, which they loaded on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I protested against them on the day they sold provisions. There were also Tyrians living in Jerusalem who brought in fish and all kinds of merchandise, which they sold on the Sabbath to the people of Judah and in Jerusalem. I contended with the nobles of Judah and said to them, ‘What evil thing are you doing, profaning the Sabbath day? Did not your ancestors do the same, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us and upon this city? And you add to the wrath of their fathers, who transgressed against me. Therefore, as soon as the shadows were drawn up at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded the gates to be shut and not to be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, so that no burden might be brought in on the Sabbath day.” Nehemiah 13:15-19.
18 – Because the writer of the epistle to the Hebrews speaks of him, urging us to enter into that rest, lest we fall into the same example of disobedience.
“Let us fear, then, lest perhaps some of you seem to have missed the promise of entering his rest. For the gospel was preached to us as well as to them, but the word they heard did not benefit them, because it was not mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said: ‘As I swore in My wrath, they shall not enter My rest,’ although His works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: ‘And God rested on the seventh day from all His works. And again in this place: They shall not enter my rest. Since, therefore, it remains for some to enter it, and those to whom the good news was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, he again sets a certain day, Today, saying through David, long afterward, as it is said: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day after that. Therefore, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For he who has entered his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same example of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:1–11.
19 – Because this was Jesus’ custom.
“And when he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom, and stood up to read.” Luke 4:16.
20 – Because Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, also had the same custom.
“And they departed from Perga and came to Antioch of Pisidia, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.” Acts 13:14.
“And when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that the same things might be said to them the next Sabbath.” Acts 13:42.
21 – Because this is the day that the early church kept.
“For Moses has had throughout many years in every city those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.” Acts 15:21.
“And as was his custom, Paul went in to them, and for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures.” Acts 17:2.
“And every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, and persuaded Jews and Greeks.” Acts 18:4.
22 – Because whoever does not keep the Sabbath, even if he keeps the other commandments, becomes guilty of all.
“For whoever keeps the whole law and stumbles in one point becomes guilty of all.” James 2:10.
